The Mortal Instruments: The City Of Bones

Nowadays, it's pretty hard to find a great fantasy novel that belongs to a series that is not a rip off of Harry Potter or Twilight. A lot of them come across as cheesy or too overromantic, but I am very happy to say that The City of Bones by Cassandra Clare does not disappoint.
Though it does remind me of a mix of Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and Twilight, it has a voice all its own that will keep the reader wanting more. I found that I could easily relate to the main character, 15 year old Clary Fray, even though we did not have much in common.
The characters are all strong and independent, and though there are many that you have to keep tabs on, Cassandra Clare did a great job of making it easy for the reader to keep up. The action never seems to stop, keeping the reader hooked, and the plot never gets confusing or grows to big and intricate that the reader loses interest.
In this story, the reader finds themselves in New York City, following Clary and her best friend Simon into a wildly popular teenage hangout, where she finds she can see a mysterious group of teenagers that no one else can see, who in fact kill what she thinks is a boy. As she tries to continue her daily life, she realizes the she is the only one who is seeing not so normal things. Then one day, she runs into one of the boys from the mysterious group of teenagers who killed the "boy" at the club. His name is Jace Wayland, and little does she know that he will be following her into a new life of adventure and danger, one that could change her family and herself forever.
Cassandra Clare is an excellent author and did a great job on her book The City of Bones. I cannot wait to get my hands on her next book!
